Solid vs. engineered hardwood
Solid hardwood is one piece of wood from top to bottom. It can be sanded and refinished many times over its life and suits living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and hallways over a dry, stable wood subfloor.
Engineered hardwood has a real wood wear layer bonded to a stable core. It moves less with humidity, which makes it the practical choice in much of Hampton Roads — over crawlspaces near the water, and often over concrete slab.
Where hardwood fits, and where it doesn’t
Hardwood is at its best in living areas where you want the real thing and long-term value. For full bathrooms, laundry rooms, and other wet areas, many homeowners pair it with tile or LVP, which we install too. Over slab, hardwood is often possible with a moisture check and the right subfloor system; we’ll talk through options at your measurement.
Humidity and crawlspaces
Our summers are long and humid, and many homes on the Peninsula and Southside sit over crawlspaces near rivers, creeks, or the Bay. Wood naturally responds to humidity, so at the measurement we check the crawlspace vapor barrier and take moisture readings, so the floor you choose will actually hold up.
Refinish or replace?
Many older homes in Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, and Portsmouth still have original oak or pine under the carpet. If there’s enough wear layer left and the subfloor is sound, refinishing can be the better value. If it’s been sanded too many times or damaged, replacement is the honest answer. We’ll show you what we see.
How a hardwood job runs
- Free on-site measurement: Nick measures each room, checks the subfloor and moisture, and talks through species, width, and finish options.
- Clear scope and price: including any subfloor repair, old flooring removal if you want it, and stair or transition work.
- Prep: subfloor repair and flattening, and acclimation where the product calls for it.
- Install and finish: the floor, then stair treads, risers, nosing, landings, thresholds, and trim so every edge is finished.
A typical whole-home hardwood job runs two to four days, depending on square footage and prep.

Is engineered hardwood real hardwood?
Yes. It has a real wood surface over a stable core, so it looks and feels like solid wood and handles humidity changes well.
Can hardwood be installed over concrete slab?
In many cases, yes, usually with engineered hardwood and the right subfloor setup. We’ll check your floor and talk through options at your measurement.
Do you install hardwood stairs?
Yes. Stair treads, risers, nosing, and landings are part of our hardwood services, and we can match them to your new floor.
